The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS, is the main advocate for global action on the epidemic. It leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.
November 21, 2005 On November 21, 2005 UNAIDS launched the UNAIDS/WHO HIV/AIDS Epidemic UpDate 2005. The Update features the global and regional estimates on HIV and AIDS and the new trends in the evolution of the epidemic. This year’s report will have a special section on HIV prevention. 7 July 2005 Applying the "Three Ones" Principles in the Russian Federation Project launched 7 July 2005 The launch of the project "Coordination in Action - Applying the Three Ones Principles in the Russian Federation" took place on 7 July in the UK Embassy and was chaired by Vladimir Starodubov, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation, representing the main counterpart. Representatives of UN agencies, Russian partner organisations and major stakeholders participated in the event. The launch coincided with the first meeting of the project Steering Committee.
The project aims to ensure an effective national response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and strong coordination of activities among all partners and financing mechanisms. The UK Department for International Development (DfID) and the Swedish Agency for International Development (Sida) have decided to support the implementation of the 'Three Ones' principles in Russia at the national level.
On September 20-23 in Moscow the RF Ministry of Health and Social Development and UNAIDS/UNDP held the First National Conference on National HIV/AIDS Spending Assessment in the Russian Federation.
"It is our duty to significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases, including HIV and other infections, as well as to introduce new medical tests and health monitoring programs for newborns", stressed President Putin in his address to the representatives of the Government of Russia, the Federal Council Presidium and to the Federal Assembly Leaders on September 5, 2005.
In his address to the participants President Putin stressed that "achieving considerable improvement in the quality of life of Russian citizens is the key goal of the federal policy".
